Seiko Prospex ‘Captain Willard’ Reissue SPB153 - 2020

Here we have a re-issue of one of the most famous Seiko's ever made, the Seiko 'Willard' SPB153.

Why the ‘Willard’? The original Seiko 6105, the watch around which is this is based, was an extremely popular watch with those in the armed forces during the Vietnam conflict. When it came to choosing a watch to have on the wrist of Captain Willard, the main protagonist in the fictional masterpiece Apocalypse Now, wore the 6105 throughout the movie and hence the ‘Willard’ moniker sticking with Seiko enthusiasts forever more.

This is not the first reissue of the Willard, but perhaps the most faithful. The original watch was a tool watch, an absolute tank that earned its reputation in gruelling situations. The SPB153 feels very much so up for the task. It features a 42.8mm steel case, aluminium uni-directional 120 click bezel, heavily bevelled sapphire crustal mimicking the original’s bevelled mineral glass, and is powered by the 6R35 automatic movement. This particular reference features a beautiful Olive Green dial and bezel that really set it off, while the choice of colour is subdued enough to ensure it doesn’t detract from it’s tool watch credentials.

The particular piece was sold locally in July 2020 and presents in mint condition. No marks of note, with the only hints of wear being the lightest of hairlines on the polished surfaces. See images for full condition details.
